If you have ever found yourself wishing you could step through a wardrobe and emerge into a land of enchantment, you might be surprised to learn that a slice of that magic exists right here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Tucked away near Cedarville, the Bush Bay Trail, affectionately known by locals and adventurers as the “Narnia Trail”, offers a whimsical escape that feels straight out of C.S. Lewis’s imagination. With its moss-draped boulders, winding forest paths, and a surprise landmark that perfectly mirrors the iconic lamppost, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to add a little wonder to their next hiking trip. I’ve hiked all other Michigan and this spot is just so unique. I love photographing the magic of the nature this special place
Why the “Narnia” Name?
The nickname isn’t just marketing; it’s a nod to a long-standing tradition. The trail, which winds along the rocky shoreline of Lake Huron, is dotted with massive, moss-covered dolomite boulders. These rocks create narrow passages and fairy-tale nooks that feel entirely removed from the everyday world.
The experience culminates at a lone, whimsical lamppost that stands in the woods, a surreal sight that makes every hiker pause and wonder if they’ve truly crossed into another realm.
What to Expect on Your Adventure
-
The Vibe: This is a place of quiet solitude. You’ll walk through lush cedar forests, past the remnants of old settler cabins, and along the dramatic, rocky shores of Lake Huron.
-
Difficulty: It’s an easy-to-moderate hike, making it a great choice for families and casual hikers. The round-trip distance is roughly 2.1 to 4 miles, depending on your chosen path and how much exploring you do.
-
Terrain: Expect a natural forest floor with roots, rocks, and occasional wet spots. You’ll want sturdy footwear to navigate the uneven terrain comfortably.
-
Wildlife & Nature: Beyond the “magic,” the area is a haven for nature lovers. It’s fantastic for bird-watching, and you might even spot deer or rare plant life along the mossy, shaded paths. Depending on the time of year you’ll find a variety of wildflowers and an abundance of mushrooms.
Essential Tips for Your Visit
-
Know Your Starting Point: You can access the trail from the Bush Bay Trailhead (near the Carmeuse Lime & Stone quarry) or from the John Arthur Woollam Preserve.
-
Follow the Markers: Keep an eye out for red/orange arrows that help guide you along the path. In winter or times of heavy snow, the trail can be harder to follow, so having a map app (like AllTrails) on your phone is a good safety precaution.
-
Leave No Trace: Because this area is ecologically sensitive, especially the moss on those beautiful boulders, please stay on the designated trail. Avoid climbing on the mossy rocks to help keep this spot preserved for future explorers.
-
Pack Accordingly: There are no restrooms or water facilities at the trailheads. Don’t forget bug spray, especially in the spring and summer, and consider packing a picnic to enjoy at one of the scenic coves along the water.
Whether you are a fan of The Chronicles of Narnia or simply someone who appreciates a trail that feels a bit more like a fairy tale, the Bush Bay Trail is one of the Upper Peninsula’s true hidden gems. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the noise of modern life and wander into a landscape that invites you to dream.

And if the wonders of the landscape, from the shades of blues in the water to the greens of the trees, is not enough then there is the little wonders of the mosses, native wildflowers and variety of mushrooms. On my last trip I saw the Lesser Fringed Gentian and the Fen Grass of Parnusses in bloom, those names are magical themselves.
