Dahlia Farm Senior Portrait Session
In September I had the pleasure of doing a double Dahlia Farm Senior Portrait Session at
Summer Dreams Farm in Ortonville. These two girls booked a friends senior portrait session together, which is a great way to share the time at Summer Dreams Farm. Before the session I talked to each girl about outfit choices and accessories that would work great with this location. In regular pre-session consultations I also go over different location options and what type of clothing works best at the different locations. Some outfits work in multiple locations so we may use those at the end of one location and then the beginning of the next location. The topic of this location came up in one of the girl’s consultation. They were looking for a spot with a lot of flowers. Since I’m always on the lookout for new, unique locations I pay a lot of attention to spots near and far. I work on staying up to date on any of the location’s restrictions and permit/usage fees. For this session the girls each brought a couple outfits and since I always bring a pop-up changing tent to photo sessions we were all set! Don’t forget accessories! Kyra brought along a great hat for a flower field photo session and I brought along the teal chair.
We explored the gorgeous flower fields and the girls enjoyed choosing different spots based on the colors they wanted included in their Dahlia Farm Senior Portrait Session. We may have taken some time to just soak in all the Wonderfull-ness surrounding us on this summer evening in Michigan! I couldn’t believe all the different colors. In some spots the variety of different colors was just amazing. If you have a chance to visit the Summer Dreams Dahlia Farm I highly recommend it. Even better would be let’s talk about your very own dahlia farm senior portrait session or a dahlia farm family portrait session!

Ah, what a fun session for these Utica Macomb Senior Portraits! Molly attends Utica High School and it was so awesome capturing her senior portraits. After talking with Molly and her mom we decided to go to Detroit for her senior portraits. Molly wanted some fun, bright murals for a backdrop for some of her portraits. I thought the DIA would be another perfect spot for her. Since Molly is a gorgeous contemporary and ballet dancer I encouraged them to bring along her pointe shoes as well. She has had professional dance portraits taken at her dance studio but we wanted to incorporate her love of dance into this story for her since it’s such a big part of her life. We lucked out with a beautiful evening in Detroit when the weather apps suddenly called for the chance of rain. Lucky for us the rain went north.
Utica Macomb Senior Portraits
Isn’t the classy glamour of the DIA the perfect backdrop for this gorgeous girl? From the fountains out front to the soothing cascading stepping stone water feature to the abundance of white and grey marble walls, arches and steps – what a place to showcase this classy girl!

After DIA we took a drive to Eastern Market’s infamous murals. We took a quick drive around to show Molly her options and select some murals that appealed to her. What a vibrant place, so suitable for the girl full of personality. Wouldn’t you agree?
After Eastern Market we hit the heart of Downtown Detroit for some flowers on Library, a stop at Parker’s Alley and up to the rooftop of the Z Garage. A great circle tour of this vibrant city!

For Senior Portraits I love helping others who need ideas on where to shop! My latest Senior Portrait Session Shopping Inspiration I partnered with Hello Fancy Boutique in downtown Rochester Michigan. I love to shop local and I love to encourage the same for my clients. Who doesn’t love to shop local? Besides this boutique has so many great options to put your own flair into your high school senior portrait session!
For the featured photo shoot with a local boutique I gathered some clients that are current high school seniors. I could have put out a call for models on my business FB or Instagram page but I decided to provide this perk to current clients. When I contacted the boutique earlier in the week they were excited to be featured as they love their high school senior customers. They chose the outfits they wanted to feature and I was able to photograph the girls both in the store and outside. It was such a fun experience for all!

Top Tips for Choosing the Ideal Location for Your Senior Photo Session
There are a number of decisions you need to make when planning a senior photo session and choosing a location is one of them. You can’t choose just any location either – it needs to fit in with your personality and the style of your shoot. I’m here to help! I love getting to know your senior and helping them decide on the perfect location – or locations for their senior photo session. Let’s go over some Top Tips for Choosing the Ideal Location for Your Senior Photo Session
Here are a few tips to help you narrow down your options a little quicker.
- Decide what you want your photos to say about you. Who are you? Do you love the outdoors, art, sports? Are you a bit of a flower child? By jotting down the things you love, a few location ideas should spring to mind. Your photos need to showcase your personal style, so choose your location accordingly.
- Look for locations with different features. We will capture a variety of photos, so we’ll plan for a location with different spots and features. Examples of features include fences, trees, a swing, water or anything that could act as a backdrop and fits the senior’s style and personality.
- Find out about possible restrictions. If you’re considering using a commercial location, I’ll check to see if we need a permit to take photos. Some permits can sometimes take awhile to process.
- Consider timing. Some locations are busier than others and if you want to avoid crowds of people, you will need to time your shoot well. It’s better to have as little people in the background of your photos as possible.
- Lighting matters too. Natural light is a must for photos, including your senior portraits. You could have the best background, but if the lighting is bad, you won’t get the best results. It’s also important to remember that you might need to time your shoot around the best lighting. For locations and time when we don’e have the best I bring studio lighting along with me.
- Decide what you want to wear. The outfit you choose for your senior photo session also matters when choosing a location. For example, wearing an evening dress to the park doesn’t exactly work very well. Your outfit should also match your personality, so decide on this before you start looking at locations. Bring along a favorite outfits, and now a great time to treat yourself to something new> Bring a dressier option too if that is ‘you’. Don’t forget about accessories!
- Get creative. There are no set rules when it comes to choosing a location for your photo session. Let’s get creative, think outside the box, and choose a location that suits you.
I’ve been adding pages to help with decisions on locations. Here is the page about Detroit Senior Photo Session locations. Stay tuned for more!
