Here are some things to think about when choosing outfits for your custom portraiture session.
Sessions work well with colors that you can easily find in nature, like greens, blues and browns and even jewel tones. Give some thought to having a group wear different tones of the same color. Go for simple patterns or solids, or a muted ‘organic’ design (nothing that may be cut off or non-readable in a certain pose or crop). Fitted clothing flatters and avoids making people look wider than they are.
Some good ideas are jeans and a nice shirt/top, a little black dress, a stylish jacket. Bring a variety - some dressy, some casual Accessories are fun and help to show your personality. Make sure clothes are not wrinkled and are stain-free!
Some clothing issues to avoid...
- Avoid wearing white.
- Avoid strapless or thin-strapped shirts/tank tops
- Avoid stripes (unless muted), wild patterns and shirts with writing
- Avoid strong bright colors, unless under a jacket
- For business head shots, shirts or jackets with long sleeves should be worn
Our goal should be to achieve a timeless photo that you will cherish forever with no regrets. Current fashions are fine but avoid making too much of a statement, or at least give your statement plenty of thought. Let me know what your plans are so we can plan accordingly with appropriate backdrops and locations.
I will provide a lot of assistance with posing. Here are some things to keep in mind, in case we get carried away. Keep you body on an angle to the camera and don't put hands in your pockets, just thumbs at the most. I may start out with all these things right but don't want to miss any moves when I'm behind the camera, that result in little issues.
A few tips for the day of the session are to remember to bring and apply lip balm. Dry lips can stick in various places leaving gaps. Also, check those kids' faces and use a damp washcloth before the session. You may want to apply a bit of lotion at home. A little lotion on hands and run lightly over the hair, avoiding the part area, can help with fly-aways. Use a lint brush if needed on your clothing. Feel free to apply or bring hairspray. Also, drink extra water the day before your session and earlier that same day. Bring along a water bottle if you want.
Thanks! And lets chat about all this to make sure we are making the most out of your custom portraiture session!
